And the winner is: Mai-Thi Nguyen-Kim! Her video Corona geht gerade erst los (Corona is just getting started), published on April 2, 2020, has ranked first in the Top Trending YouTube Videos 2020 (based on data from January 1 through November 15, 2020), according to an official blog post of the German YouTube team on December 3, 2020. Of course, music videos, film trailers and kid’s stuff were not counted in.
Mai-Thi, 33 years old, holds a PhD in chemistry and started as a YouTuber. In recent years she became a well-known television presenter and book author, too. Since summer 2020 she is also a member of the senate of the renowned research organization Max Planck Society – next to former president of Germany, Joachim Gauck, several state ministers as well as board members of BASF and Siemens, among others.
Another coronavirus video ranked fifth: Coronavirus – unnötiger Alarm bei COVID-19? (Coronavirus – unnecessary alarm with respect to COVID-19?) was presented by physics professor Harald Lesch, famous for his appearances on TV (and later on YouTube) which started in 1998.
A side note: Both videos, as well as the whole top 10 list, were produced in Germany. Apparently, Germans’ media diet is not yet fully globalized.
In the corresponding US top-trending tables, published on the international YouTube blog, science did not show up as a topic, as far as can be told tell from the post and the channels’ names.
